Welcome to My Blog

Here it is … my very first blog.  A lot of people have been asking me to write one.  I was reluctant.  What would I say?  What would I write about?

Many companies use their blogs to advertise their businesses.  Don’t worry, my blog is not a sales pitch.  Hey, if you end up falling in love with my company – Perfect Taste Catering  – because of what you read here, that’s great.    If you long to be sold, visit our website.  Look at our event photos, read our menus and peruse our bravos.  After all, our best sales people are our previous clients.

But here on the blog, I’m going to give you a glimpse into the crazy world of catering.  It’s a place I’ve lived 24/7 for the last 21 years.   That’s a lifetime in the catering business.  Just ask anyone.  Don’t we all know someone who is a “former caterer?”

I remember meeting my husband’s doctor for the first time.  When he found out I owned a catering business he mentioned that his wife was … you guessed it…a former caterer.  I asked him why she got out of the business and his answer was she didn’t like working for $3 an hour!

Thankfully I’ve done a little better than that.  My CPA says I’m one of the few people he knows that likes what I do so much I’d do it for nothing.  And on some jobs, that’s what it seems like we’ve made after we count all the extra hours we spent to make the event perfect.

Most people get into catering because they love good food and like to cook.  A sister asks for help with a baby shower.  A neighbor needs some food for a surprise birthday party for his wife – the wife who cooks so bad she can burn water.  One or two more little help out requests and voila, the “I want to be a caterer “obsession strikes.   “Everybody loves my cooking and I’ll make a fortune.”   The insidious and deadly brain disorder is now activated.   That’s when the egg hits the skillet!  They discover cooking for strangers is not quite as much fun.   Not to mention the work involved in producing even a small dinner.  And when people pay for their food – instead of getting it for free – it adds a whole new pressure level.

Sometimes I wonder how I’ve lasted this long.  As with any small business owner, there have been days where I wondered if maybe I should quit, but you know what…I’m addicted.  I still absolutely love what I do.  I need to do it.   I pretty much adore everything about this business.  I thrive on learning new things and there’s never a dull moment.  Interpreting a client’s vision is a psychic jackpot and I like to win.  People are really fun at parties.   They do strange things (more about that later).   It’s my passion.

I’m going to share everything with you…I’ll give you a behind the scenes look at some fantastic events, introduce you to some of my employees, vendors and advisors, show you some fabulous venues, share recipes for some of my favorite party dishes, offer valuable information to help make you a better party planner and in general make the blog fun to read.  It will be like catering – different all the time!

I’ll update as often as possible.  Catering is a very cyclical business.   But be kind to me… I’m new to this whole blogging thing.  I’m open to ideas, comments, suggestions, or whatever.

Thanks again for coming.

Have a delicious day!
